After realizing that I have been unknowingly ingesting minute amounts of gluten, I decided to try an enzyme, as I have heard a lot about them. I happen to be very sensitive to even tiny amounts of gluten. And as anyone knows who shares this diet, it can be tough. You think you’ve been super strict. But apparently not strict enough.
Anyhow, I found a bottle of Gluten Defense enzyme pills at GNC, and the woman kindly said I could try them and return them if I wasn’t satisfied. With that assurance, I began taking two pills with meals, as directed. From their website:
“Why are gluten and casein a concern?
Because some individuals experience digestive discomfort when they eat foods with these proteins – even when they try to avoid obvious sources:
For some, hidden gluten and casein can be the cause of occasional gas, bloating, and indigestion. However, the right digestive enzymes can make a difference when trying to support a gluten free and casein free lifestyle.†
Why take Gluten Defense™?
Gluten Defense™ is specifically formulated to defend against hidden gluten:
Gluten and casein are found where you’d never expect them – salad dressings, cold cuts – even toothpaste! Gluten Defense™ features DPP IV (dipeptidyl peptidase) activity, from a protease enzyme specific to digestion of gluten and casein.
Gluten Defense™ also includes a complete range of digestive enzymes:
Competing products only tackle gluten – Gluten Defense™ helps you digest other proteins, fats and carbohydrates as well.”
For a full week, I felt little difference in my health. In the last few days, however, I have noticed that the symptoms I have when contaminated with gluten are subdued. This is encouraging, though it hard to say how effective the enzymes are, as diets can change from day to day.
But, for around $12 or $13, it’s not a huge investment to make, and if it eases some of your symptoms, I’d say give it a try. One note: I would not use this remedy to “cheat” on your diet. As everyone who is medically prescribed a gluten-free diet knows, gluten damages your body. An enzyme that makes you feel better doesn’t stop the fact that you’re being poisoned. Remember that! All in all, comfort is super important in our lives, but I want to make sure we’re all on the same page concerning gluten enzymes.
