Resources for Gluten-Free Cookies

Sometimes you want a cookie that tastes homemade but you lack the time for scratch baking. So Kyra Bussanich, pastry chef and owner of Crave Bake Shop, and I tested and tasted our way through 13 brands of gluten-free chocolate chip cookie mixes and packaged dough to find our favorites.

Generally speaking, the prepared dough was simpler; you just plop it onto the baking sheet and put it in the oven. Plus you can keep the dough in the freezer and bake off a few cookies at a time, a boon for gluten-free kids who need a last-minute treat. However, the prepared dough was quite pricey, around $7 to $8 for a dozen cookies.

In exchange for your time and effort, the box mixes were certainly less expensive, closer to $5 for a yield of three dozen or more cookies. While the preparation of some of the mixes was very simple, others were much more involved. And once you break out the mixer, why not just make cookies from scratch?
