Hold on a sec, I’m going to Twitter my Foursquare to Gowalla, and then add a new place to my Hot Pot, while I Skype with all my Yelp & Facebook fans. Whhaaaa??
It feels like we’re in the middle of another tech-bubble, this one filled with cutesy geo-location services, a flurry of followers, fans and “likes”. As the operator of a website and blog, I too have to take advantage of some of these services, or risk looking irrelevant and out-of-touch. I use website analytics to see how visitors are finding out about GlutenFreePDX.com as well as our blog, and the points-of-entry are varied and many. Google is a mainstay, though Bing, Facebook and Twitter are quickly becoming go-to spots to find links to our site, as well as many others in the Portland area.
As awesome as a lot of these systems are, so many of them overlap, and simply add noise to the scene. It would be nice if things cooled off a bit, and our visitors wouldn’t have to feel obliged to jump through a myriad of hurdles to find the right information. Perhaps time is the remedy, and some of the less robust social media outlets will die out. In the meantime, we wish you the best of luck navigating these busy waters, taking advantage of the countless avenues of information.
